Last weekend, I was able to put those training wheels aside and be the lead for a beautiful wedding in Ft. Collins. Karina and Rich celebrated their vows in front of family and friends under blue but sometimes threatening rain skies. Rich who is in the Army at Ft. Carson had just returned from being overseas. In his dressed uniform, Rich looked striking watching his bride walk with her brother, who is also in the Army.

My photography services were a gift to the Karina and Rich from a family member – and I am so happy that I was able to be part of such a beautiful day!

So on a beautiful Saturday afternoon – with a little snow on the ground, I meet up with Sheba and the bridal party, and Sheba had brought on a few other local photographers, so I got to work with Heather Smith-Matthews, another favorite local photographer in Denver. Here are a few of my favorite photos from the special day – it was truly a great experience to work with Sheba and Heather.

During the reception, 2 young ladies in grass skirts came out and danced through the tables to an African dance song. From what I was told it was a ritual for the bride and groom. The music was amazing, and by the end of the dance, other women had wrapped sweaters, napkins or their shawls around their waste and were dancing with these women. It was magical.

Recently I was able to shoot with the talented Sheba Wheeler. I haven’t gone through my wedding photos yet from 2 weeks ago, but she gave me the opportunity to photograph a bride in Sheba’s studio. This stunning bride let us pose her and move her and have our way with her for almost 3 hours, and she enjoyed it as much as we did! Her eyes were stunning and just captured you. She would stare at me and I would stare at her – she was truly breathless, which I think all brides are on their wedding day. Breathless.

Another beautiful wedding that I helped assist Becky with Becky Young Photography. Becky is fun to work with and has been very helpful to me with working at weddings to get some experience so that I can eventually go on my own. Here are a few of my favorite shots from this weekend:

If you notice – the bible is in Spanish- the officiant was a relative of the Groom, and the wedding was spoken in English and Spanish, with the use of the bible in Spanish. Such a beautiful detail!

One of the fun shots that I have fallen in love with is the ring shots. Becky loves to do ring shots and while the wedding is eating (and who wants a photographer taking pictures while eating?!) we’ll borrow the bride and groom’s wedding rings and go out and scout some spots for some ring shots. We’ll use any kind of prop and then both get some pictures. We found this rock water fountain formation and just got silly with excitement. What you don’t see in this picture – is that right below where the water runs off… is that the water falls onto rocks below, where easily if a wedding ring was to get wet, slippery and start going with the water… could easily disappear. As one photographer was taking these amazing shots, the other had their had below ready to catch rings if they moved. They never did move, but we were better safe then sorry!

I personally put my own spin to this photo and did some heavy editing and grunge’d it up some.

Becky and the couple went around the park for about a hour before the wedding getting some amazing shots of the two together and single shots of the bride and groom. Being a photo-journalistic style photographer, Becky would suggest little things and then let things fall into place as she took their photos. She would have them talk to each other, say something funny and catch them in the moment. As a 1st time assistant in a wedding, I stood in awe of how she worked with the couple. She was truly amazing!

In due time the wedding was to start, a small occasional wedding, something great for me to start off with. What threw both Becky and I was when the officiant of the wedding had everyone stand around the Bride and Groom in a circle to circle them with love that I would wonder “How do I photograph the bride and groom if they are in the middle?!?” And you know – for those who do… I’m not a tall person!

But these are the things I expect to learn if I want to jump into the wedding arena. You make do, you find away and you make it your own. So one of my all time favorite shots is standing behind the Groom’s boys, with the Bride and Groom in the background. Becky said later it was one of my best shots of the day.

It was a beautiful day – and I enjoyed every moment, being something part of what we all hope will be ever lasting love. To say I helped create the memories that both Becky and I hope they will look back at and smile.
