This past week, it was travel time and I was headed off to the Big Apple. My sister asked if she could come along and it wasn’t till the last day of our 6 day stay together that we realized we have never done something like this with it just being the 2 of us. We had a blast being at Times Square, the Empire State Building, Ground Zero, tour around the Statue of Liberty and catching a show of Mama Mia. She ended up doing much more while I worked, which I’m glad she got out and about. She left on Thursday to head back to Texas and I stayed an extra day with one of our member’s of the buying group catching a few more site seeing things. Want to see what I did? Take a look!

A good friend of mine Ian – took an amazing shot of my kids and I at our Denver conference, he had to get one of my sister and I in NYC.

My friend Amy and I are huge Sex and the City fans so we took the tour bus that went to a lot of the locations where the show and movie were filmed. We even stopped at a few places and we stopped at “Steve’s and Adian’s bar ‘Scout’” for a Cosmopolitan Martini!

Even when I’m in front of the camera – I’m instructing how to set the shot up. I love the stoops in NYC and I insisted that Amy and I get a shot on one of them (not Carrie’s place). John was great in taking this shot.

One of my favorite specialty favorites of my business is designing cards. Most people don’t know that this is how I got started with my photography business. I’ve been a graphic designer for over 18 years, most of the design in website design. In 2006, after sending cookie-cutter Christmas cards to friends, I decided to get back to my roots (as I called it) and designed my first Christmas card. I’ll be honest. It was awful, and when I say awful, not in the color balance, or bad lighting, or the subjects in the photo (my kids) but it was the design (or at least to me it was). Not working in the print world for awhile and not in print sizes of photos, I was a tad bit rusty. But everyone loved them. For months afterwards I had people come up to me and tell me “You have to do our Christmas Card next year” and I would say “Ok – supply me a picture, I’ll design the card.” I’m a graphic designer, not a photographer, even though I had a Grandfather and a Father who were very skilled in photography and taught me the basics… and the friends would say back “Oh no – you have to take our picture too!” and the rest was history!

And there you have it – how creating cards from photos became a photography business!

With the Graduating Class of 2012 just a few months away, cards will be designed. I can create both Graduation Announcement (announcing the time / place / date of your Graduation) if you want something different from the traditional High School Announcement. Or you can order the popular Open House announcement, which is usually a get together of your friends and family celebrating your graduation.
